There are a number of stunning beaches within 45 – 60 minutes drive of Laxay in both directions. They all include driving through breathtaking scenery on the way.
On Lewis, these include Cliff, Reef, Bosta and Uig Sands if you drive to the west, and Traigh Mhor and North Tolsta north of Stornoway. On Harris they include Luskentyre, Seilebost, Horgabost, Borve and Scarista.
Callanish Standing Stones are a group of prehistoric standing stones on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. They are over 5000 years old and are thought to have been used for ritual or astronomical purposes.
Stornoway is the largest town on the Isle of Lewis and is the cultural and economic centre of the Western Isles. There are many historic sites to explore in and around Stornoway, including Lews Castle and the Stornoway Blackhouse Museum.
Harris Tweed is a famous cloth that is handwoven on the islands of Lewis and Harris. You can visit Harris Tweed weavers and mills on both islands to learn about the history and production of this iconic fabric.
Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is a restored blackhouse village on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. The blackhouses were traditional homes made of dry stone walls and thatched roofs, and visitors can tour the houses and learn about traditional island life.
The Butt of Lewis is the northernmost point on the Isle of Lewis, and it offers stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean. There is a lighthouse and a small cafe at the site, as well as a range of coastal walks.
The Scalpay Lighthouse is located on the Isle of Scalpay, which is a small island off the east coast of the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The lighthouse was built in 1788 and is one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland. It is located on the northern tip of the island, and the light it emits can be seen for over 20 nautical miles.
St Clement’s Church is located at Rodel on the southern tip of Harris. It is believed to have been built in the late 15th century by Alasdair Crotach MacLeod, a chief of the MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan.
